Description of Incident:
A sunny Sunday afternoon turned tragic for an Oakland Park father whose 7-year-old son died while visiting a friend’s pool. This is the fourth drowning Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have investigated in five days.
Broward Sheriff’s deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue were dispatched at around 5:40 p.m. Sunday to the apartments at 95 NE 41 Street after a caller advised a boy was unresponsive in the water. The victim, Damien Tubbs, and his father were attending a gathering at a friend’s home where both kids and adults were at the residence and the pool. Damien was in the water playing in the shallow end. It appears he wandered into waters too deep. When he was spotted submerged in the water, someone jumped in and took him out. Damien’s dad performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Oakland Park Fire Rescue arrived and transported him to Holy Cross Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
BSO Homicide and Crime Scene detectives are investigating, but no foul play is suspected.
Damien Tubbs’ death marks the fourth drowning investigation since Feb. 29. On that date, an adult male was found floating in a canal in North Lauderdale. The following day, March 1, a man said he was swimming with a friend in a Deerfield Beach lake, but his friend went under water and never resurfaced. On March 3, a Pompano Beach woman was found by a neighbor floating in their backyard pool.
The men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office advise all residents to please be careful around bodies of water. For tips on drowning prevention, please visit www.sheriff.bso/safety/drowningprevent.cfm.
