Description of Incident:
Through fingerprint analysis, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives have identified an apparent drowning victim who died while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Wednesday morning.
The German born victim has been identified as Helmet Mihelstart. Mihelstart’s fingerprints were matched with those on file from his 1984 misdemeanor arrest.
Following a 911 call shortly after 10 a.m., a BSO helicopter pilot was dispatched to the area of the 4100 block of El Mar Drive behind the Sea Lord Resort Motel, where he spotted the adult male about 100 yards from shore. The U.S. Coast Guard assisted BSO’s Marine Unit with recovering Mihelstart’s body.
Beachgoers told BSO detectives they saw the victim swimming in the in the ocean then a short time later he stopped swimming. Foul play is not suspected, and homicide detectives noted no signs of trauma to the body. The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause of death.
