BSO HONORING HOMELESS HELPERS

The homeless men who helped subdue a violent robbery suspect as he fought with a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy will be recognized during the Annual BSO Awards Ceremony Wednesday morning.
James Finch, Jose Ramos and Carmello Maldonade will receive a round of applause and some tokens of appreciation when they are called to the stage to shake hands with Sheriff Al Lamberti. The homeless men came to the aid of Deputy Kevin Meyer at a Pompano Beach McDonald’s restaurant on March 3rd.
After the homeless helpers are officially honored the awards ceremony will proceed as planned, recognizing the recent accomplishments of several other citizens and BSO employees who performed heroically or outstandingly.
Community leaders and activists will receive the Sheriff’s Special Recognition Award. Federal agents and law enforcement employees will receive the Sheriff’s Distinguished Community Service Award. Several volunteers will get a pat on the back for their selfless service and the Exceptional Service Award will be presented to a number of BSO employees who excelled in their assignments. Support Units of the Year will be named in BSO’s Departments of Law Enforcement, Detention and Fire Rescue and Employees of the Year will be selected from the ranks of civilian employees, deputies, detectives, and public safety communicators. Deputies who faced perilous situations in the performance of their duties will receive the Gold Cross Award.
Finally, four deputies will be promoted to sergeant, two sergeants will become lieutenants and a new fire rescue division chief will be installed.
