DON’T BE A TARGET FOR ONLINE CRIMINALS

Date: July 21, 2014               PIO Number: 14-7-20

On May 24, Nicolas Gomez, a resident of the city of Weston, made arrangements to meet with a buyer for a used iPhone 5, which he had listed for sale on Craigslist. Abayomi Abimbola arrived at the meeting, but instead of paying for the phone, Abimbola grabbed it, jumped back into his car and fled. Gomez was able to describe the car and tag to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston district deputies who responded. Abimbola was subsequently arrested and is facing a charge of grand theft. Abimbola has also been involved in several similar thefts.

When selling items online, keep in mind that not all buyers are legitimate. Whenever possible, consider meeting strangers in a safe place. Starting tomorrow, BSO’s Weston district office will serve as a safe haven for the city’s online buyers and sellers to meet.

Anyone with information or who may have been a victim is asked to contact Detective Mark Copley at 954-321-47-38 or contact Broward Crime Stoppers anonymously at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org.
