Description of Incident:

The body of a man who was seen jumping into the New River Friday morning (1/30/09) was found and recovered by authorities later that afternoon.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies at the Broward County Courthouse were notified at around 8:30 a.m. that a man had jumped into the New River right across from the Courthouse. That man, 29-year-old John Ross, showed up at the courthouse to face his troublesome past, but made another bad decision that ultimately cost him his life.

During a hearing for a prior arrest of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the judge ordered that Ross’ bond be revoked and directed bailiffs to take him into custody. After hearing the judge’s decision Ross decided to leave the courthouse. The bailiffs contacted BSO deputies assigned to the courthouse and they began searching for him. A witness, who was working on a boat along the New River, alerted deputies that a man had gotten on his boat and then jumped into the water. The two deputies spotted Ross in the river and jumped in to retrieve him, but he went under water and was not seen again.

BSO with the assistance of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s Marine Unit, searched for hours trying to locate Ross. At approximately 1 p.m., FLPD divers found Ross’ lifeless body not far from where he was seen jumping in.

Ross’ body was retrieved and was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, though at this time his cause of death appears to be an accidental drowning.

The investigation continues.
