  • St. Malachy Catholic Church

  • Unidentified white male in his late 20’s to mid 30’s

Description of Incident:

The man who brazenly stole an ornate collection box filled with money from a Tamarac church may be praying that the Broward Sheriff's Office finds him before a higher authority does.

The thief was being watched from above as he committed the early morning crime at Saint Malachy Catholic Church. A security camera recorded the scoundrel as he walked up to the collection box, kneeled down, looked around, picked up the box, and calmly walked out with the collections.

The suspect hit the church at about 4:40 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002. The chapel is open around the clock for the public. Workers at the church noticed the box missing later the next day.

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff's Office District VII (Tamarac) say the collection box, valued at nearly $300.00, was found smashed open near the church. Missing from the box was perhaps $100.00 in collections.

Crime scene photos of the suspect are attached to this news release, posted on the Broward Sheriff’s Office website:

A reward of up to $1,000.00 may be available for information on this crime. Anyone with information on this crime should call (954) 493-TIPS.
