Place of Occurrence: Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

  • Lillian Friedman, female, 88, Margate

  • Angel R. Santos, male, 49, 10/2/56, Miami-Dade

Description of Incident:

Angel Roger Santos is a swindler, a cheat, and thief who spent years in Florida prisons but never learned that crime doesn’t pay. On Tuesday, Santos was arrested on a warrant for conning an elderly woman into thinking he was an airport limo driver and then ripping her off.

Santos found his latest victim at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on June 6th. Lillian Friedman, an 88-year-old Margate woman had just arrived home from New Jersey and was waiting for her luggage when Santos asked if he could help. Friedman said she needed a ride and Santos said that that’s what he was there for. Santos grabbed Friedman’s luggage and led the woman to the parking garage where his limo –a stolen Cadillac with a stolen tag- was parked. He loaded the woman’s bags in the trunk, put her in the back seat, and hit the road.

When they arrived at the elderly woman’s apartment, Santos carried her bags to her door, charged her $23.00 and left. The next day, while unpacking, Friedman noticed that her credit card and about $3,000.00 worth of jewelry was missing. Unfortunately, her credit card had already been used to rack-up nearly $500.00 in charges. Fortunately, the crook had been captured on video surveillance using the victim’s credit card at a clothing store at the Dolphin Mall in Miami.

On June 19th, a BSO investigator spotted a man at the airport who looked like the crook on the surveillance tape. The detective interviewed the man, got his name and other important information, but didn’t have enough evidence to arrest him. Investigators then showed a photo line-up to Friedman who picked Santos out as the man who had ripped her off. Detectives now had enough to get an arrest warrant. Santos was arrested in Miami-Dade County the next day.

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives believe Santos has been pulling the same scheme at airports and hotels in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Orange ounties. They are asking anyone who may have been victimized by Santos to contact Detective Robert Lerner at (954) 359-1244. The investigation is continuing and Santos will likely be transferred to one of the BSO jails next week.
