Description of Incident:
The Broward Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad uncovered a potentially explosive situation when they raided a Deerfield Beach home packed with illegal fireworks.
At around 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2002, BSO investigators served a search warrant at the home at 700 NW 1st Way. When no one answered the door, deputies made their way into the house and found box upon box of illegal explosives.
Neighbors expressed shock and concern as the Broward Sheriff's Office carefully removed the fireworks from the home. Their concern was well placed. According to members of the Bomb Squad, there were enough explosives in the home to have virtually leveled the structure.
BSO had learned of the large cache of fireworks several days prior after someone blew up a mailbox in the neighborhood. The suspect in the mailbox explosion told investigators that he had bought the small bomb from someone at the home on NW 1st Way. Detectives then obtained enough evidence to secure the search warrant.
No arrests have yet been made, but the investigation is continuing as detectives pursue at least one suspect.
The Broward Sheriff's Office continues to look for illegal and potentially dangerous fireworks as the 4th of July holiday draws nearer.
