Description of Incident:

A man classified as a violent, habitual career offender walked into a busy convenience store on a recent morning, took his time choosing a snack from a shelf and a drink from the cooler and approached the cashier. But instead of paying for the treat, he brandished a knife at an employee and her 6-year-old daughter and grabbed cash from the register.

Store surveillance video captured the crime, and Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and robbery detectives captured the criminal. Calvin Emile Baker, who has an extensive criminal history that includes robbery, domestic violence and drug charges, was charged Friday, January 13 with armed robbery with a weapon and aggravated assault with a weapon.

The video shows Baker, 50, walk casually into the store past other customers and choose a snack and a drink. Then he goes to the cashier and asks her a question. She points him toward the bathroom, at which point he slipped behind the counter and threatened her with the knife. The cashier’s 6-year-old daughter watched the entire ordeal.

A witness led detectives to Baker, who is being held without bond on the recent charges, as well as warrants for violating probation.
