  • Michael Walker, 43, 12/3/58, Albany, GA

Description of Incident:

An intensive murder investigation, which sent Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives on a 3,500-mile trek across the U.S., has resulted in the arrest of 43 year-old Michael Walker of Albany, Georgia in connection with the bludgeoning death of an Oakland Park man.

Concerned friends of Allan Kaufman, 53, found his beaten body inside his apartment on Saturday, October 26th, after not hearing from him in several days. The Broward Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was blunt head trauma.

On Tuesday, October 29th, two BSO homicide detectives apprehended Walker without incident at an Amtrak train station in Emeryville, California. Walker, who was on his way to San Francisco, has confessed to the murder.

According to investigators, the victim met the suspect approximately two weeks prior to his death and quickly befriended him. Their relationship evolved and the suspect recently had moved into Kaufman’s Oakland Park condo. Days before the murder, the two fought and Walker moved out, subsequently checking himself in to the Cosack Foundation, a Hollywood homeless shelter.

On the morning of Saturday, October 26th, witnesses saw the suspect exit the victim’s apartment with luggage and jump into a waiting cab. Investigators tracked down the cab company and learned Walker had been dropped off at a West Broward Boulevard Amtrak station. Amtrak police were immediately notified and confirmed Walker had purchased a ticket from Broward County to Washington D.C., with a connection to California. Police in Nashville, Tennessee, where Walker had a D.U.I. record, also assisted by providing us with a good set of fingerprints and photo of our suspect.

Walker has been charged with murder and is being held without bond in California, pending extradition.
