Description of Incident:
A multi-agency illegal firearms investigation ended with the death of a 23-year-old suspect who was shot and killed after pointing a gun at undercover law enforcement officers.
The incident occurred at 4:02 pm in the 2300 block of NW 12th Court in Pompano Beach. The suspect, Johnny Wright, had arranged to sell several guns to undercover members of a task force comprised of BSO deputies, municipal police and federal agents. The suspect chose the 12th Court location to complete the deal, but when he encountered the undercover deputy who was supposed to buy the guns that Wright had in his car Wright pointed a firearm at the deputy. The deputy pulled his service weapon, as did an undercover Coral Springs Police Officer, and both fired at the suspect. Wright was rushed to North Broward Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No law enforcement officers or innocent persons were hurt.
Two other people were taken into custody in connection with the case. No further information on them or any possible charges is available at this time.
Wright has a criminal history including five arrests in the past three years on charges including trespassing, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, possession of ecstasy, and resisting arrest.
Per standard procedure the shooting is under investigation by BSO’s Homicide, Internal Affairs and Crime Scene Units. Coral Springs Police and other agencies involved in the task force are also investigating.
