Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff's Office Robbery detectives are looking for the man and woman who snatched the wallet of an elderly Deerfield Beach man earlier this month. A reward is offered for information leading to the identification of the suspects.
At about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2002, 94-year old Abraham Sobel drove to the 1800 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach to check out a new eatery in the Century Plaza. Pulling into the parking lot, Sobel’s car hit a curb, flattening one of the tires. After a quick phone call, one of Sobel’s neighbors arrived to help.
As Sobel and his neighbor prepared to deal with the flat, a woman unknown to either showed up, acting as though she knew Sobel. She then said her cousin, a man also unknown to Sobel, would be happy to change the tire. Sobel told his neighbor it was okay to go back home while the ‘cousin’ worked on the car. As the vehicle was lowered from the jack, it was apparent that the spare tire was low on air. The nameless man said if Sobel would give him a dollar, he would go buy a can of Fix A Flat. When Sobel took out his wallet to hand over some money, the strange man grabbed the billfold and he and his female accomplice drove off in their car.
By the time Sobel got home and called his credit card companies, the crooked couple had already tried to charge a purchase at a Pompano Beach shoe store, but were turned down. Sobel learned, however, that the dishonest duo had succeeded in racking-up nearly $200.00 in charges at a Pompano Beach department store and a gas station.
The male suspect is white, about 5-foot-7, with a very thin build and thick, dark hair. His female accomplice is white, about 5-foot-9, heavy-set, with shoulder length brown hair. They were last seen driving off in a black SUV of an unknown make. Photos of the suspects are attached to this release as it is posted on the BSO website, www.Sheriff.org.
Anyone with information on the identity of the suspects should call Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS. A reward of up to $1,000.00 may be available for information leading investigators to these crooks.
