Description of Incident:
One suspect is dead and another is in the custody of the Broward Sheriff’s Office after the two Miami men fled in a stolen car from Parkland Police early Tuesday morning.
Just after 1:00 a.m., a BSO Dist. 8 (Weston) deputy who was traveling south on I-75 spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed with its lights off with a Parkland PD cruiser not far behind and the BSO helicopter overhead. When the deputy relayed the information to dispatch, he was informed that Parkland police were following the 1995 white Nissan from their city. The vehicle was stolen May 3, 2002, from Pembroke Pines.
The suspects exited I-75 at Griffin Road and proceeded north on Weston Road, where officers and deputies lost sight of them near South Post Road. A short time later the unoccupied Nissan Maxima was spotted in a nearby warehouse area. While searching for the suspects, one of them appeared, yelling for deputies to help his friend who had disappeared in the lake.
Members from BSO’s dive team responded to the scene and recovered the body of the second suspect shortly after 4:00 a.m. near the 3200 block of Meridian Parkway in Weston. The suspect, who surrendered was later identified as Serguey Placencia of Miami. Placencia was arrested for grand theft auto and transported to BSO’s Main Jail. Detectives did not release the name of the second suspect until his next of kin is notified of his death. An autopsy will be performed to officially determine the exact cause of death.
Per departmental procedure following any unnatural death, BSO homicide detectives will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounded this case.
