  • Sidney Carvalho, 22, 12/9/79, 1611 SW 127th Avenue Davie, FL

Description of Incident:

A 22-year old Davie man with a history of DUI is being held without bond in the Broward Sheriff's Office Main Jail after appearing in magistrate court this morning. Sidney Carvalho is charged with driving drunk and killing a Ft. Lauderdale man in August.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on August 28, 2002, Sidney Carvalho left the Fantasy Lounge at 3489 Griffin Road in Ft. Lauderdale and sped eastbound in the westbound lane, eventually crossing over the concrete median an into the eastbound lanes heading east. Carvalho made a left turn onto 34th Avenue and drove into the path of an oncoming motorcycle driven by 22-year old Arthur Kennedy of Ft. Lauderdale, throwing Kennedy from the bike.

With Kennedy lying critically injured on the ground, Carvalho continued driving northbound on 34th Avenue, dragging Kennedy’s motorcycle beneath his vehicle until he crashed into a fence. Carvalho fled the scene but was tracked down by a BSO K-9 deputy.

Kennedy was rushed to the hospital where he died two days later. Carvalho was booked into jail that evening and bonded out on October 17th.

During a court appearance on November 12, 2002, a judge revoked Carvalho’s bond and ordered him back behind bars pending trial.

In April of 1999 Carvalho was arrested for trying to steal nitrous oxide from an Oakland Park hospital. Seven months later, he was busted for aggravated battery. In July of 2000, Davie Police arrested a drunken Carvalho after he threw a quart of beer at a gas station clerk. Plantation Police arrested Carvalho for drunk driving on September 23, 2000 and Davie Police arrested him for the same charge about a month later. In January 2002, Carvalho was arrested by the Broward Sheriff's Office after causing a drunken disturbance in the parking lot of a bar.

The charge of DUI Manslaughter alone could put Carvalho behind bars for up to thirty years.
