Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Secret Service’s Miami Electronic Crimes Task Force arrested five identity thieves as they prepared to sell the personal information of thousands of people.

Operation “Shark Tank,” named after the leader of the group, Michael “Sharkey” Peters, 42, began in December 2012 after a confidential informant revealed the group’s criminal activity.

Peters and his four co-defendants, Tracy Menelas, 30, Devin Dorvil, 25, Troy Paul, 33, and Kervin Bonhometre, 26, gathered unsuspecting victims’ names, dates of birth and social security numbers, and Peter would then find buyers for the data.

In meetings with the undercover from January through March, Peters negotiated the sale of each victim’s information for $14-20. The group would only receive payment for the information once the buyer successfully used the data in a fraudulent transaction. In that timeframe, Peters handed over a list with the names of around 1,300 victims and a thumb drive with the information of 5,000 others.

The undercover detective met with all five suspects on March 12 to discuss their ongoing business. The group was taken into custody, each facing felony charges of aggravated white collar crime, fraudulent use of IDs and computer crime with intent to defraud.

The source of the data is under investigation.

If convicted they could each face at least 10 years in prison.
