Whatever gifts they choose to go under their trees, some lucky Broward County children will go on a holiday shopping spree thanks to the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Walmart.

Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti will join 40 children at the annual “Shop With the Sheriff” event at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Walmart in Lauderdale Lakes.

It’s the eighth year that BSO school resource deputies have selected deserving children, who will each get to select $100 worth of gifts for themselves, their family or friends. BSO’s school resource deputies will walk the store aisles to help the children stay within budget and make good choices. The money is raised from an annual BSO holiday raffle, as well as private donations.

For the second year, the Starlight Children’s Foundation recommended several of the young shoppers who are struggling with serious illnesses.

“Every child deserves some holiday fun,” Sheriff Lamberti said. “I applaud the BSO deputies who raise money and organize this event each year to make that possible for these children.’
