Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating an apparent suicide in Pembroke Park.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2002, a 20-year old Hispanic male reportedly ran in front of a New York to Miami passenger train.

Witnesses aboard Amtrak train number 91, the Silver Streak, said the man ran into the path of the train as it sped along the CSX tracks just west of Hallandale Beach Boulevard. The train was traveling at a speed of up to 79 miles per hour.

The train, scheduled to depart from New York on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Miami at 5:25 p.m. the next day, had been delayed in Baltimore for approximately four hours. None of the 34 passengers or 14 crew members aboard was injured.

BSO detectives are withholding the name of the deceased pending notification of the next of kin.

Foul play is not suspected, however BSO detectives are continuing with their investigation at this time.
