Description of Incident:
As the one-year anniversary approaches, Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are seeking the public’s help in order to determine who shot and killed 21-year-old Adrian Smith during an attempted armed robbery near Fort Lauderdale.
On August 15, 2000, just before 11 p.m., BSO deputies responded to 911 NW 34 Avenue after receiving a 911-call from a man stating he and his friend had just been shot by an unknown subject. When deputies arrived they discovered one of the victims had been shot.
Smith and Emanuel Richardson were walking north on 34 Avenue when a dark colored vehicle approached and the passenger attempted to rob them at gunpoint. Richardson was not injured, but Smith died at the scene. Three months after the death of Adrian Smith, his family and community leaders held a candlelight vigil at St. George Park ( 3501 NW 8 Street) to encourage anyone to come forward with information about his killer.
Detectives have only a vague description of the suspect. He is described as a black male about five feet five inches tall with a stocky build.
The BSO Homicide Unit continues to investigate this case and is committed to finding Adrian Smith’s killer. Anyone with information on this case is urged to call BSO Homicide Det. Glenn Bukata at (954) 321-4210 or call Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at (954) 493-TIPS. Remember Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Smith’s death.
