Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy who they believe was deliberately shot when the suspect’s intended victim ran for safety outside a home in Pompano Beach Sunday afternoon.
Jawon VeShawn Matthews, of Tamarac, was standing outside of his godmother’s home, located at 830 N.W. 5 Avenue, when he was shot as he played in the driveway. BSO deputies were dispatched to the home after receiving numerous 911 calls, reference shots fired in the area.
Matthews was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:45 p.m.
A BOLO (be-on-the-lookout) was issued for two possible suspect vehicles seen leaving the scene. The shooter is believed to have been in a dark blue newer model Mitsubishi Mirage or a Kia Sephia with no hubcaps, and the second vehicle possibly involved is an older model (1990’s) burgundy, 4-door Regal Century. BSO detectives also want to locate a large white, 4-door older model Chevy Caprice type vehicle with black tag on the front and dark tinted windows. The vehicle, which was seen parked outside the home earlier the day of the shooting, also has a spotlight – similar to those found on a police car – on the driver’s side.
BSO detectives have not yet determined the identity of the suspect or suspects involved, and the motive remains unclear.
Anyone with information on this case is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS or call BSO Det. Frank Ilarraza at (954) 321-4210.
