2. Maurice “Ram” Jackson, 28, 8/7/74, 1471 NW 32 Ave. Ft. Lauderdale

Description of Incident:

Two men – considered armed and dangerous – who were involved in a gunfight Tuesday that left two dead are being sought by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

At least 20 shots were fired in the midday shootout at Driftwood Terrace, a densely populated apartment complex near Fort Lauderdale. Killed were Jerry “Jay” Smith, who was shot twice, and John Calixte, 26, shot 14 times. BSO Homicide detectives now believe Calixte was the intended target of a drug rip-off involving Smith and his two accomplices, now identified as Demetrius “Nasty” Dixon, 30, and Maurice “Ram” Jackson, 28.

Investigators believe that Nasty Dixon phoned Calixte and suggested they meet at the apartment complex (which was home to none of them). When Calixte arrived in his white Ford Excursion SUV Dixon and Smith were waiting to ambush him. Calixte, Dixon and Smith all pulled their guns and opened fire. Dixon apparently escaped injury while Calixte and Smith were killed. Dixon fled the scene in a getaway car driven by Ram Jackson. Because a thunderstorm had just passed through the area, residents of the apartment complex were indoors and out of harm’s way when the bullets started flying. Otherwise, there could have been innocent victims.

A warrant charging him with two counts of murder has been issued for Nasty Dixon. Ram Jackson is named in an unrelated armed robbery warrant and is wanted for questioning in this double homicide.

Both men should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone knowing their whereabouts should dial 911. Information can also be relayed to BSO Homicide Detectives Glenn Bukata or Ken Kaminsky at 954-765-4321. Callers wanting to remain anonymous can phone CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS and can also collect a cash reward.

Media note: Photos of Dixon and Jackson are available to be photographed at the BSO front desk at 2601 W. Broward Blvd., but not by email or internet due to technical problems. Photos of victims Smith and Calixte are attached to a previous news release at
