Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies joined forces Wednesday with insurance industry representatives for an agency-wide insurance fraud operation.
As BSO deputies encountered motorists throughout their normal daily routines after crashes or traffic stops, members of the National Insurance Crime Bureau representing 27 insurance agencies verified insurance information in a command post in BSO’s Tamarac district office. The operation was called Operation FIV-O (Fraudulent Insurance Verification Operation).
Insurance fraud is estimated to cost the country about $80 billion a year. Florida ranks fifth highest in the nation for uninsured motorists.
Throughout the day, there were 50 vehicles stopped. Deputies issued 12 citations for no proof of insurance.
