Description of Incident:
A Ft. Lauderdale man with a lengthy criminal history is in the Broward Sheriff's Office main jail again after deputies caught him assaulting a woman in her own home.
At about 4:30 the morning of Sunday, April 28, 2002, Devon Newman forced open a window and crept into the home of a central Broward family as a 50-year old woman and her 11-year old son slept inside.
Startled by a noise, the victims awoke to find Newman standing in the bedroom. The woman rushed at the intruder who threw her on the bed and held her there. As Newman sexually assaulted the woman, she screamed for her son to run for help.
The boy ran across the street to a neighbor’s home, pounded on the door and yelled for help, explaining that a man had broken into his house and was attacking his mother.
Moments later, BSO deputies arrived on the scene and heard screams coming from the victim’s home. Rushing inside, they found Newman on top of the hysterical woman who had balled herself into the fetal position. Deputies grabbed Newman, handcuffed him, and took him to the BSO district 5 headquarters before transporting him to jail. The woman was taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Center.
The Jamaican born Newman left New York to come to south Florida where he lived on the streets of the Osswald Park area of unincorporated Ft. Lauderdale. BSO Sex Crimes Unit detectives have charged Newman with sexual battery, burglary, and battery. He is being held without bond. Newman has a history of drug abuse and an arrest record dating from at least May of 2000, including charges of loitering and prowling and numerous alcohol-related offenses.
