WANTED THUG NOW IN CUSTODY

Date: November 23, 2002 Time: 9:40 pm

BSO Case Number: PB02-10-12361 (update)

Place of Occurrence: 2117 NE 9 Street, Pompano Beach

Victim(s): State of Florida

Suspect(s): Robert Derrick Gunn, 22, 5/5/80, 1920 NE 28 St., Lighthouse Point

Description of Incident:

A 22-year-old habitual offender, featured on BSO’s T.H.U.G.S. (Taking Hoodlums Using Guns Seriously) website and wanted in Palm Beach County for assaulting a deputy and escape, was captured Saturday night in Pompano Beach.

On October 23, 2002, Robert Derrick Gunn was arrested by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. Gunn fled from the arresting deputy’s vehicle and during the escape, the deputy was injured.
Gunn was also wanted by the Broward Sheriff’s Office for Aggravated Assault, Grand Theft and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. BSO’s charges stem from a residential burglary in Pompano Beach in late October of 2002. Gunn has an extensive criminal record which includes burglary, possession of marijuana, fleeing and eluding police, narcotics violations, drug trafficking, selling cocaine, violation of probation, larceny and escape.

Because of his violent history, the young Gunn has been considered armed and dangerous and was listed on the BSO website (www.sheriff.org) as one of BSO’s Most Wanted and was also a featured T.H.U.G.S. fugitive. Operation T.H.U.G.S. (Taking Hoodlums Using Guns Seriously) is being implemented throughout Florida to reduce gun violence by targeting felons with dangerous and violent criminal histories. The Broward Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are working together to identify felony fugitives believed to be in, are wanted in, or have ties to, Broward County. Target fugitives have existing violent crime warrants and are currently wanted in Florida for homicide, kidnapping, robbery, or sexual assault and have used a firearm associated with the wanted offense.

BSO Detective Jason Gertler, assisted by the BSO Fugitive Squad, arrested Gunn without incident Saturday night in Pompano Beach. He was not armed but had 30 crack cocaine rocks in his possession.
