Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the death of a Pompano Beach convenience store clerk after an apparent armed robbery turned to gunfire late Tuesday night.
At this point in the investigation, detectives believe that shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, two gunmen entered the Right Way Food Store at 13 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach with the intention of robbing the business.
For an unknown reason, one of the robbers shot a store clerk, 50-year old Abed Damiati. Another clerk working at the time, 48-year old Hammad Mourtada then used his own gun to return fire, striking one of the robbers.
The crooks left the store, jumped into a vehicle driven by a third man, and fled.
Mr. Damiati, of 333 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach, died at the scene. The other clerk was apparently not injured.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office notified deputies and other local law enforcement officers to be on the lookout for the robber’s vehicle and within an hour, it was located near the 800 block of SW 4th Court in Boca Raton. The names of the alleged robbers are being withheld pending official charges, which are expected to be filed.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is continuing with the investigation into this case.
