Description of Incident:

The body of a homeless man was found floating in a canal near Davie Thursday afternoon.

At 3:41 p.m. a passerby called 911 to report that a body was floating in the canal on the north side of State Road 84, just west of University Drive. Davie Police initially responded to the call but quickly determined that the canal was outside their city. BSO deputies and Homicide detectives were then called to the scene to investigate.

The dead man is believed to be a 58-year-old homeless person who held a sign and begged for money from motorists at intersections in the area. Detectives observed neither signs of trauma to the body nor any indications of foul play. The Broward Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. It is believed that the man may have fallen into the canal and drowned or could have been stricken by a medical condition.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until he is positively identified and his next of kin are located and notified.
