Description of Incident:

A Fort Lauderdale man is being held without bond today in the BSO main jail, charged with the brutal beating death of another man late last week.

Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives say 20-year old Willie James Sheely of 3391 NW 6th Court in Ft. Lauderdale confessed to using a large piece of concrete to smash the skull of 33-year old Melvin L. Graham of Ft. Lauderdale following an argument on Friday, March 8, 2002.

At about 2:00 am that Friday, Sheely and a group of friends were at the Longshoreman’s bar at 500 NE 2nd Street in Ft. Lauderdale when a dispute involving Graham erupted.

According to witnesses, Sheely and his friends left the area in their vehicles and were followed by Graham. Sheely drove to a friend’s home at 3451 NW 6th Ct. in Ft. Lauderdale with the vehicle Graham was in pulling up behind Sheely. Almost immediately, several of Sheely’s friends pulled up in two other vehicles.

Sheely and five of his friends began fighting with Graham. At one point, Sheely picked up a large, cylindrical piece of concrete and struck Graham in the head. He then picked up a second chunk of concrete and threw it through the rear window of the vehicle in which Graham had arrived. Everyone involved then fled the scene.

BSO detectives began interviewing witnesses at once and pinpointed Sheely as the prime suspect. On Monday, March 11, 2002, Sheely gave a sworn, taped statement to investigators, admitting to the murder of Melvin L. Graham.
