Description of Incident:
Thanks to the media’s cooperation announcing the arrest of a man sought for a sexual battery and the continued search for his accomplice, Broward Crime Stoppers received numerous calls identifying the wanted suspect.
One of those callers was a family member of Jonathan Carter, 21, who identified Carter as a friend of the first man arrested for the crime, Christopher Baker, 24. On March 1, Carter turned himself into Broward Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives without incident. Both suspects had admitted their involvement in the crime. Baker was taken into custody on Feb. 23 thanks to good old fashioned detective work which led investigators to his location.
The surveillance video released on February 15 showed Baker and Carter leaving the scene of the crime on Feb. 9. The 48-year-old victim was walking north on State Road 7 at around 5:30 that morning to meet a co-worker who gave her a ride to work. As she arrived at the meeting location, the One United Bank at 2412 N. SR 7, she was approached by the two suspects. One was on a bicycle; the other was on foot. One of the suspects pointed a gun at the victim forcing her behind the bushes near the drive-thru teller area. The other man struck and choked the victim, pushing her to the ground. The assailants then forcibly sexually battered the victim. The pair took the woman’s purse and phone and fled the scene.
Both suspects face charges of sexual battery and robbery for this crime and have lengthy criminal histories. Carter has been previously arrested on charges that include burglary, robbery, and theft and is currently on probation for burglary. Baker’s priors include loitering, robbery, theft, burglary and aggravated assault.
