DEATH OF AN INMATE

Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the death of an inmate, who was transported to an area hospital for treatment after he started banging his head against a wall.

Inmate John Beraglia, of Deerfield Beach, was booked into the Broward County jail on September 12, 2001, for violation of probation reference a criminal mischief charge. After Beraglia attempted to cut his wrist with a spoon, he was housed in the infirmary at the North Broward Detention Center in Pompano Beach under suicide watch.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, Beraglia started acting disorderly and proceeded to strike his head against the corner of a wall within his cell when medical staff attempted to intervene. The inmate was bleeding from his head and was transported to North Broward Medical Center in critical condition. Beraglia was pronounced dead at 4:28 p.m., a short time after his arrival.

Per departmental procedure, the BSO homicide unit will continue to investigate this case. BSO’s Office of Professional Compliance will also review this case to make sure proper procedures were followed. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.
