Description of Incident:

A man who witnesses said was walking down the street armed with a rifle was shot by a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy late Wednesday afternoon in Oakland Park.

Shortly after 4 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 5200 block of North Dixie Highway in reference to 911 calls regarding an adult male walking armed with a rifle. One of the first BSO units to arrive on scene spotted the man, who was later identified as Jermaine McBean, with the rifle walking north on Dixie Highway and asked for back-up units to respond.

Another unit arrived. When the sergeant and deputy saw the armed man enter the Green Tree apartment complex and walk toward the occupied swimming pool, they decided to approach and try to get him to drop his weapon. The sergeant and deputy who were in full uniform identified themselves and ordered McBean several times to stop and drop the weapon.

With the weapon in his hand, McBean began to turn and point the gun in the direction of the deputy. Deputy Peter Peraza, a 12-year BSO veteran, fired his service weapon. No other shots were fired, and no other injuries were reported.

The suspect was transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

After the shooting, crime scene detectives were able to examine McBean’s weapon and determine it was a Winchester Model 1000 Air Rifle, which resembled a high-powered hunting rifle.

Per BSO policy, homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and Dep. Peraza was placed on administrative assignment.
