Description of Incident:

A 45-year-old Pompano Beach man lost control of his vehicle Sunday evening and hit a tree, throwing him from the vehicle and killing him, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide investigators.

At 6:49 p.m., Scott Tibus was driving his 1999 silver Chevrolet Malibu when he attempted to merge into northbound traffic in the 2600 block of North Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach. Witnesses said he was driving erratically and hit the rear of another vehicle, though he continued to speed northbound.  The Malibu swerved into oncoming traffic, then up onto the sidewalk, just missing three light poles before turning sharply to the right. The vehicle crossed both southbound and northbound lanes of traffic before jumping the east curb and hitting a tree in the 3400 block of North Dixie Highway.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Tibus dead at the scene.
