Description of Incident:

A man, confronted by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies during a break-in, set off a high-speed pursuit Thursday and injured two deputies before being arrested.

BSO deputies Mike Gardner and George Wesolowski responded at 9 a.m. to a report of a residential burglary in progress. Upon arriving, the deputies confronted Joshua Boyce outside the home. When deputies tried to detain the suspect but he resisted and a struggle ensued. Boyce was able to get to his car, a black Honda Civic, and used it to violently assault the deputies. Deputies then fired at the suspect and Boyce was struck in the leg. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Deputy Gardner to Broward Health North with non-life-threatening injuries.

BSO closed roads and raised bridges to hamper the suspect’s escape. The suspect continued north on State Road A1A. He drove erratically and at high speeds until he came upon a marked BSO Dodge Charger at the intersection of State Road A1A and Southeast 1 Avenue. The suspect crashed his car into the side of the BSO vehicle, causing serious damage to both cars and injuring Deputy Jeff Hurt. Boyce then put his car in reverse in an attempt get away. The car was too damaged to drive, and BSO deputies were able to arrest the suspect. Both Deputy Hurt and the suspect were transported by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue to Broward Health North. None of their injuries was life-threatening.

Detectives from BSO’s Homicide unit is investigating. Boyce has an open warrant in Palm Beach County for burglary. He will be charged with two counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, one count of resisting arrest with violence and one count of aggravated fleeing to elude police.
