Suspect(s): David L. Prince, 42, 6/19/60, no permanent address

Description of Incident:

A career criminal has been charged with felony murder for stealing a religious pendant from a man who was shot to death last week.

At 4:55 a.m. last Sunday (8/25/02), BSO deputies responded to 1275 NW 27 Avenue in reference to the shooting of 38-year-old Rodriquez Thomas. Thomas was transported to Broward General Medical Center where he later died. BSO Homicide detectives said Thomas and a friend were dropping off his cousin, who lives in the area. Shortly after exiting his white Pontiac Grand Prix Thomas was shot by an unknown gunman.

Seconds after the shooting, David Prince approached the nearly-dead Thomas, checked to see if he was breathing, then yanked a pendant from his neck and left the scene. Prince pawned the pendant, depicting Moses with the 10 Commandments, at the Classic Pawn Shop on nearby Broward Blvd. Per state law, Prince left his thumbprint at the pawnshop and detectives have linked the print to him.

Homicide detectives believe that Prince knows who shot Thomas but he has refused to give any statement and would not reveal the name of the gunman who killed Thomas. Because the theft of the pendant was directly linked to the homicide Prince was charged today (9/1/02) with Felony Murder and was booked at BSO’s Main Jail.

The actual gunman is still being sought. Anyone with further information is urged to call BSO Homicide Det. John Berrena at (954) 321-4210 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, at (954) 493-TIPS.
