Time: 4:09 p.m.
Place of Occurrence: 820 S.W. 11th Court, Deerfield Beach
Jurisdiction: Deerfield Beach

  • Glenn Thervil, male, 30, 10/27/81, 1720 N.E. 11th St., Deerfield Beach (DECEASED)

Suspect(s):

  • Roderick Tyrone Ferguson, male, 25, 3/13/87, 1021 S.W. 11th Ct., Deerfield Beach (IN CUSTODY)

Description of Incident:

When Glenn Thervil became angry that his acquaintances hanging out in a Deerfield Beach park wouldn’t give him any more cigarettes, he pulled out a gun and threatened one of the men. The decision ended badly for the 30-year-old, who was killed Wednesday afternoon in the street by the man he threatened. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies found Thervil’s body with the .32-caliber handgun still in his waistband and a shotgun wound in his chest.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, detectives arrested Roderick Ferguson, 25, who will face one count of first-degree murder. Ferguson and his friends were hanging out in Mayo Howard Park Wednesday afternoon when Thervil got angry that Ferguson wouldn’t give him cigarettes. After the confrontation, Thervil left the park in the company of two acquaintances who admonished him for pointing the gun at Ferguson and told Thervil to stay home.

But Thervil returned later that day and had a second confrontation with Ferguson. Ferguson shot Thervil with a shotgun, and Thervil died at the scene as Ferguson and the others ran away.

BSO deputies set up a perimeter in the area as they searched for the shooter using the K-9 team and a helicopter. One of the men who had been in the park with Ferguson hid inside a nearby house but came out at the urging of the SWAT team. The investigation into the shooting and the events that led to it is ongoing.

Media note: Ferguson’s mug shot is attached to this release.
