Description of Incident:
The “Phat Boyz” thinned out the inventory of a Ft. Lauderdale clothing store on the morning of January 30th, 2002 …and the Broward Sheriff's Office is asking for help tracking down the criminal crew.
Broward Sheriff's Office investigators say that 20-year old Shawn Smith and his band of burglars virtually emptied the Sit ‘N Phat Clothing Store of it’s contents by using a car to rip the front door off the business. A surveillance video clearly shows Smith and some of his cohorts casing the store just before the break-in.
Shortly before 5:30 in the morning, the “Phat Boyz” pulled three vehicles up to the store at 3220 W. Broward Boulevard. One of the cars backed up to the business, the driver got out and hooked something up to the store’s door, got back in his car, then revved-up the motor and tore the door from its frame. With a gaping hole where the door had been, about a dozen of the clothing crooks were free to run into the store and take what they wanted.
BSO detectives have tracked down similar rip-offs in Broward and Miami-Dade counties and believe the same gang may be behind those burglaries.
Hallandale police busted Smith, who has a long criminal history, in December last year for an incident similar to the Sit ‘N Phat case. Now BSO has secured a warrant for his arrest.
If anyone knows where detectives can find Shawn Smith, they may get a reward of up to $1,000.00 by calling Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS. We don’t need the caller’s name, just
