A grass-roots public service campaign targeting teen distracted drivers will be presented Thursday at Deerfield Beach High School by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue’s life safety educators.
Just Drive was developed last spring by Boyd Anderson High School’s baccalaureate film students to take the texting and driving awareness effort to a new level. The initiative is one of several partnerships between Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and many Broward schools.
Nearly half of drivers aged 18-20 admitted texting or sending emails while driving, according to a recent study. “Distracted driving is a big problem and getting the message out through peer-to-peer campaigns like Just Drive is an effective way to reach those at greatest risk,” Sheriff Scott Israel said. Just Drive is an educational program designed by teens for teens about the dangers and risks associated with distracted driving.
After the inaugural rollout last April at Boyd Anderson High School, Just Drive was presented in May at Cypress Bay High School in Weston. Now, Deerfield Beach High School will host Just Drive and future schools scheduled include Piper High School in Sunrise, Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches and Zion Lutheran in Deerfield Beach.
Input from teens at local high schools was solicited to ensure that important facts, details, statistics and messages were being communicated effectively through this project. Recent studies have also shown that consequences of distracted driving can be as profound as drunk driving. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Fatality Facts reports that on average, 11 teenagers a day are killed in crashes as a result of distracted driving in the U.S.
