Description of Incident:

In an apparent act of suicide, a 42-year-old homeless man was killed this morning when he was struck by a freight train in Pompano Beach.

The fatal incident occurred at 4:50 a.m. on the CSX Railroad tracks, about a quarter-mile north of Sample Road. The engineer operating the northbound 77-car train told BSO Homicide detectives that he saw something lying on the tracks and, at the last moment, the object began to move and he realized it was a person. He could not stop the train until after impact. The engineer notified authorities via his radio, bringing BSO deputies and Fire Rescue units to the scene. Paramedics immediately declared the man dead.

The victim has been identified as Michael James Anderson, a homeless man who had been staying in the area. An autopsy will be performed by the Broward Medical Examiner to officially establish the cause of death. BSO Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation but, at this time, the death is presumed to be a suicide.
