Description of Incident:
Working with Fort Lauderdale Police, and posing as truck drivers, BSO detectives arrested a man Thursday for grand theft as he tried to steal a load of copper wire for the second time this week.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office was contacted after employees of the HD Supply Company discovered that a fraudulent credit card had been used to pay for a $6,500 load of copper wire that was delivered to an address in Fort Lauderdale on Monday.
On Wednesday, a second load of wire was ordered to be delivered to the same person at the same address. The information was passed on to BSO detectives, who decided that this would be a special delivery. The delivery location was 630 NW 10 Terrace in Fort Lauderdale. BSO detectives contacted Fort Lauderdale Police and FLPD detectives agreed to assist BSO with the operation.
Fort Lauderdale police and BSO deputies set up surveillance at the 10th Terrace location and were watching as the second load of wire arrived on a delivery truck driven by two BSO detectives. As soon as he accepted the load the suspect, Michael McGruder, 24, was taken into custody by the surveillance team.
McGruder was booked at BSO’s main jail, charged with two counts of grand theft, dealing in stolen property and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His bond totals $8,000. The investigation continues and additional arrests could be made.
