The Broward Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to help raise money for the organization at its NAMIWalks fundraising event Saturday at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. NAMI of Broward County is dedicated to empowering people affected by mental illness and their family members to achieve a better quality of life by providing mutual support, practical information, referral, advocacy and educational resources.
Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013
3500 W. Sample Road, Coconut Creek
sign-in at 8 a.m.
walk begins at 9 a.m.
In addition to a 5k walk, the family-friendly, pet-friendly event will include a D.J., a morning warm-up, doggie treats and pet water station, chair massages, arts and crafts, line dancing, face-painting, games, vendors and more. There will be a team poster-making station and a Meaningful Messages Wall for photos, inspirational quotes or words of encouragement for walkers. There will be a pet parade with awards for best pet costume, best in show and for the pet and owner who look most alike. There will be a mental health therapy dog exhibition, a Coconut Creek Fire Department fire truck demonstration and BSO display cars. The entrance fee to the park will be waived for attendees who mention the NAMIWalks event.
“Please join me in this positive, healthy and fun event,” Sheriff Israel said. “Together we will make a difference for this worthy cause.”
The goal of the walk is to raise both money and awareness of the need for Broward County to support a world-class treatment and recovery system for people with mental illness. All of the proceeds will be used locally by NAMI to provide support to people with serious brain disorders and to their families, to advocate for improved opportunities for housing, rehabilitation and meaningful jobs and to support public education programs designed to help eliminate the pervasive stigma surrounding severe mental illness.
