EMPLOYEE DEATH AT RECYCLING SITE

BSO Case Number: PB02-03-3074
PIO Number: 02-3-10
Date: March 8, 2002
Time: 0938
Place of Occurrence: Delta Recycling, 1951 N. Powerline Road, Pompano Beach

Victim(s):

  • Ricardo Morales, 32, 8/31/69, male, 301 NW 4 Terrace, Pompano Beach (DECEASED)

Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the death of a Pompano Beach man, who died at a recycling site Friday morning while operating a large industrial-size shredder.

Shortly before 10 a.m., Ricardo Morales was working with another employee of Delta Recycling when the shredder they were using to chop large mounds of construction debris stopped operating. Morales attempted to unblock the machine while standing on the conveyer belt. When that didn’t work, his co-operator, Francisco Ramirez, left to get a pipe or similar object in order to remove whatever was blocking the machine. When Ramirez returned, the shredder was operational and Morales was found deceased inside.

Today was the first day Morales and Ramirez operated the Zehr shredder without any supervision. The shredder was delivered to Delta Recycling on Tuesday. Zehr was hoping to sell the device to Delta. The two novices were trained to use the machine on Wednesday and Thursday.

Since Morales’s body was left intact, detectives believe he was crushed by the rollers before reaching the grinding devices.

The Broward Sheriff's Office and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Morales’s death.
