Victim(s): Lordes Guiterez, 38, 2/7/64, female, 5213 Island Club Dr.,Tamarac (HOSPITALIZED)
Suspect(s): Humberto Rangel, 37, 3/21/65, 5213 Island Club Dr., Tamarac (HOSPITALIZED)
Description of Incident:
A Tamarac couple remains hospitalized as a result of an attempted murder-suicide.
At 10:43 a.m. Broward Sheriff’s Office District 7 deputies were dispatched to the Island Club Apartment complex where shots had been fired at 5213 Island Club Drive. When deputies arrived, two wounded people where lying in the hallway outside the apartment and a small baby was lying inside on the floor. Deputies retrieved the baby and Tamarac Fire Rescue paramedics treated the wounded man and woman. Neighbors told deputies that two other people who stayed at the apartment were unaccounted for. Not knowing whether one or both of those people were still inside, and whether they were involved in the shootings, the BSO SWAT team was requested to check the residence. SWAT deputies entered at noon and found no one inside.
The investigation has revealed that the shootings stemmed from an attempted murder-suicide. Humberto Rangel, 37, and Lordes Guiterez, 38, had lived together for several years but their relationship recently deteriorated. This morning, Lordes’ sister, Ruth Guiterez and her female friend, came to visit her. After the two arrived, Rangel produced a handgun and loaded it. Before any shots were fired, the sister and her friend fled from the apartment. Rangel shot Lordes Guiterez in the chest before turning the gun on himself and firing one round into his head.
Rangel was rushed to North Broward Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition and Guiterez was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where she is listed in fair condition. No one else was injured. The baby boy, which is Lordes Guiterez’ grandson, was not hurt and was placed in the care of family members.
