Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Margate man who killed himself when a BSO detective tried to place him under arrest on an out-of-county warrant Friday morning.

At approximately 10:45 a.m. a member of BSO’s Fugitive Unit attempted to serve a violation of probation arrest warrant on Robert Hemmerich at his home at 6411 NW 28th Lane in Margate. Hemmerich, who legally changed his last name to Bevilacqua, was standing in the front yard when BSO Det. Chris Dale approached him and notified him of the active warrant out of Palm Beach County for driving under the influence and driving on a revoked or suspended license.

After verbally resisting the detective’s attempts to serve the warrant, Bevilacqua pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Det. Dale. Without harming the BSO detective, Bevilacqua then got into his white Chevy van and left the area. Det. Dale got into his unmarked BSO unit and followed the suspect, who was driving slowly, out of the Coral Cay Plantation development.

Once outside the gated mobile home complex, Bevilacqua drove for about two blocks to the intersection of Colonial Drive and State Road 7 in Margate where he stopped his van. When Det. Dale got of his car and approached the van, he saw that Bevilacqua was slumped over the steering wheel suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics transported Bevilacqua to Northwest Medical Center, which is located right there at the same intersection, where he died at approximately 11:30 a.m.
