Description of Incident:
Faced with an increase in conveyance burglaries, Broward Sheriff's Office District 5 (Central Broward) staff initiated a campaign designed to alert residents to the problem while putting the brakes on those committing the burglaries.
Between January and June 2001 there were 80 reported conveyance burglaries in Central Broward. During the same six-month period (between January and June) in 2002 ninety-nine cases were reported - an increase of 19 cases. As a result, BSO District 5 personnel started spreading the word through Central Broward at community meetings and hanging posters in area businesses of the high number of auto burglaries. The posters titled, “Gone in four seconds” depict just how easy it is for a thief to break a vehicle’s window and steal your valuables in a matter of seconds when those items are left in full view and unattended.
While on routine patrol BSO District 5 deputies also scoped out vehicles that may be targeted by criminals. When the deputy comes across a vehicle with tempting items left in plain view, he or she will leave a BSO vehicle watch card informing the driver which items could be seen along with what corrective action the driver should take to avoid becoming a victim.
Following the awareness campaign, phase two of “Operation Temptation” was put into play the beginning of this month (July 2002). After identifying the problem areas, investigators parked unmarked BSO vehicles with valuables such as purses, cell phones, and wallets in plain view. By utilizing the decoy system, detectives have cleared numerous cases and arrested seven adults and two juveniles, all of whom face burglary of a conveyance and grand theft charges. Investigators expect to clear several more cases with the arrest of Wanda Daniels, who was captured on video stealing a purse from an unmarked BSO vehicle during an undercover operation at 3090 West Sunrise Boulevard on Saturday, July 6th at approximately 11:45 a.m.
Others who have been arrested during “Operation Temptation” include: Vernon Lincoln, 48, Derrick Gillis, 22, Rudolph Peterson, 50, Travis Noltion, 19, Patrick Walls, 22, Franson Andre, 16, Eric Black, 20, and Anthony Ponder, 17.
BSO’s District 5 command staff said residents and visitors to Central Broward should expect the decoy operations to continue.
MEDIA NOTE: THE BSO UNDERCOVER SURVEILLANCE VIDEO OF WANDA DANIELS’ THEFT AND SUBSEQUENT ARREST IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR REPRODUCTION AT BSO’S MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE UNTIL 5 P.M. TODAY.
