BSO Case Number: PB02-04-2255
PIO Number: 02-4-8
Date: April 6, 2002
Time: 0640
Place of Occurrence: IHOP, 790 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach

Victim(s):

  • Michel Bienaime, 48, male, Pompano Beach (IHOP employee)

Suspect(s):

  • 1. Quinnton Braxton, 22, 2/27/80, Tampa (now in custody)
  • 2. Demetrius Edwards, 21, 8/14/80, 1822 Seaward St., Tampa (STILL AT LARGE)

Description of Incident:

One man is in custody and another is being sought following an early morning armed robbery and beating at a Pompano Beach restaurant.

The crime occurred at 6:40 a.m. at the IHOP at 790 N. Federal Highway. A man who had been at the restaurant 20 minutes and purchased breakfast food to go returned and reentered through the front door. This time, however, he was armed with a handgun and ordered three female employees (a waitress, a cook and an assistant manager) into the back room. The armed suspect, Demetrius Edwards, 21, grabbed the waitress by the hair. The IHOP dishwasher, Michel Bienaime, 48, spoke up, telling him to leave the woman alone. Edwards pistol-whipped Bienaime. As Edwards struck Bienaime in the head with his gun the weapon discharged, with the round entering the ceiling. Edwards ordered the assistant manager to open the safe in the back room, threatening to kill her if she refused. The woman convinced the frustrated robber that she could not open the safe, because its lock is on a timer, and Edwards fled empty-handed.

BSO deputies and Pompano Beach paramedics responded to the restaurant and at first thought Bienaime had been shot in the head. He was transported to North Broward Medical Center for treatment.

Edwards and his accomplice, Quinnton Braxton, 22, who waited outside IHOP, fled in Edward’s 1994 green Toytota Camry. Edwards, who is from Tampa, apparently got lost in the area of McNab Road and Dixie Highway. Knowing that BSO deputies were responding to the armed robbery and would be looking for his car, he abandoned it in the 1200 block of South Flagler Drive and escaped on foot.

BSO Robbery detectives John Donadio and Bob Kerr, acting largely on a hunch, checked the Economy Lodge at 555 S. Federal Highway. They learned that Quinnton Braxton matched the suspect’s description and had picked up takeout food that morning. Braxton was in a room at the motel and was taken into custody without incident, charged with Armed Robbery. Detectives recovered a gun from Braxton’s room and BSO divers later found a second gun the ocean near the Pompano Fishing Pier.

Suspect Demetrius Edwards remains at large. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with any information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call 911, or CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Edwards has a criminal history for crimes including drug trafficking and battery on law enforcement officers and was released from state prison on May 17, 2001.
