Description of Incident:
A stolen sports car set ablaze in Pompano Beach is the latest clue for Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives investigating the murder of a 51-year old Pompano Beach man.
Shortly before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, Philippe Michel Nicolas was found dead inside his apartment at the Tropics Resort at 1200 North Ocean Boulevard. A worker discovered the body when he went to apartment 402 to perform routine maintenance.
Investigators initially thought Nicolas, who was six feet tall, weighed nearly three hundred pounds, and had a history of health problems, had died of natural causes. However, further investigation by BSO detectives and evidence from the autopsy revealed that Nicolas was murdered.
Early in the investigation, a witness reported seeing Nicolas walking his dog near the apartment complex pool on June 16th or June 17th. It now appears the victim had been killed late the evening of June 12th or early the next morning.
Nicolas’ car, a 2001 silver Porsche Boxter, Florida tag U51 LDY, was found engulfed in flames at around 1:30 a.m. on June 13th in the 3100 block of Gateway Boulevard in Pompano Beach. The area is primarily a warehouse district, however, close by is the Circus Bar and Grill. Investigators say the person who set the car ablaze may have walked to the tavern after committing the crime.
Anyone with information about the murder of Philippe Michel Nicolas or who may have seen a suspicious person near the Circus Bar and Grill early the morning of June 13th, should call Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS or BSO Homicide detectives at (954) 321-4210. A reward of up to $1,000.00 may be available for information on this case.
