  • Manuel Dominic Vazquez M.D., 63, 4/26/39, 1394 NW 100 Avenue, Coral Springs

Description of Incident:

A joint undercover investigation involving the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florida, and the Hollywood Police Department, has resulted in the arrest of 63 year-old Dr. Manuel Dominic Vazquez of Coral Springs. Vazquez is accused of writing fraudulent prescriptions for controlled painkillers in exchange for cash.

During an eight month-long probe, a Broward Sheriff’s Office undercover detective obtained multiple prescriptions for controlled substances such as Percocet, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, and Lorcet from Vazquez. The undercover detective would receive these prescriptions from the doctor without having to undergo a medical examination or supplying medical records to justify the use of these “heavy duty” painkillers.

Vazquez would write as many prescriptions as requested by the undercover detective. On several occasions, Vazquez also wrote prescriptions for several “phantom” patients whose names were supplied by the detective. Scripts for thousands of tablets of controlled substances were purchased from Vazquez during this investigation. The cost for this special service: $150.00 for each bogus script.

The Florida Department of Health is now seeking to suspend Vazquez’s license for practicing medicine in Florida. The Coral Springs general medicine practitioner was initially licensed as a medical doctor in March of 1976. Investigators also believe Vazquez has been providing this illegal service to a select group of patients for many years.

Vazquez, who will be federally indicted, is charged with several counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute Oxycodone, Possession with Intent to Distribute Hydrocodone, Conspiracy with Intent to Distribute Oxycodone and Conspiracy with Intent to Distribute Hydrocodone.

INVESTIGATORS: Broward Sheriff’s Office, F.B.I., U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hollywood Police Dept.
