Description of Incident:

A 53-year old Fort Lauderdale man, injured when a destructive device blew up in his hand is facing felony charges today. Richardo Gonzalez was arrested in the 1100 block of Wyoming Avenue at about 7:20 pm, Monday December 10, 2001.

The Broward Sheriff's Office was called to the scene at about 7:15 Monday evening after a witness reported hearing a loud noise. The witness said he looked out his window, saw something explode in Gonzalez’s hand, and then saw Gonzalez run away.

The first deputy on the scene saw a canvas bag on the ground nearby and as he approached the bag, Gonzalez appeared and reached for the satchel. The deputy ordered Gonzalez to stop, placed the suspect in the back of the patrol car, called for the BSO bomb squad, and set up a secure perimeter.

Arriving bomb squad investigators discovered two destructive devices inside the bag and detonated them on the scene.

Subsequent investigation led detectives to a nearby home at 773 W. Evanston Circle where Gonzalez lived out of a dilapidated van. Bomb squad investigators searched and secured the van.

Gonzalez was taken to Plantation General Hospital where he was treated and released. He told BSO investigators he was carrying the devices as a means of protection because he had been mugged in the past. No other injuries were reported.

Gonzalez faces four third-degree felony counts of making, possessing, throwing, projecting, placing or discharging a destructive device. The charges are punishable by up to 5-years in prison and a 5-thousand dollar fine.
