Date: August 10, 2012 PIO Number: 12-8-10
Every year Broward Sheriff’s Office employees use their time, talents and treasures to raise awareness and money for some very worthy causes. This year BSO is being lauded as the top fundraising individual agency for the 29th Annual Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Colonel Tim Gillette who spearheads BSO’s fundraising and participation efforts for the torch run said he was honored to accept the award at last month’s Special Olympics Florida Annual Leadership Conference held in Orlando. “For 29 years we have been supporting the Special Olympics. This is one charity that has been internationally adopted by the law enforcement community. We will continue to raise awareness and serve as guardians of the Special Olympics athletes,” Col. Gillette said.
In a letter addressed to Sheriff Al Lambert, Special Olympics President and CEO Monty Castevens wrote that BSO is “being recognized for the vital role you play in our organization. You ‘inspire greatness’ every day through your on-going participation in Special Olympics Florida.”
Founded in 1972, Special Olympics Florida provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for more than 18,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
This year BSO raised approximately $48,000 for Special Olympics. Next year BSO will strive to do even more as it continues to support some very determined athletes who are an inspiration to all of us.
