Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office traffic homicide investigators have released the name of two people hit by an SUV early Sunday morning as they walked across South State Road 7 in unincorporated Fort Lauderdale.

Around 3:15 p.m., Carlos A. Perez, 29, and Maria Dominguez had been walking from east to west across the northbound lanes of State Road 7 when they were hit by a 2010 Lexus GX 460. Perez was pronounced dead at the site of the crash, and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported Dominguez to Broward General Medical Center where she is recovering from very serious injuries. According to relatives, Dominguez is visiting from Puerto Rico. Perez has no family in the United States, and BSO detectives are trying to notify his family in Guatemala of his death.

The driver 39-year-old Lawrence Thomas of Miami, later told investigators that he had been behind another vehicle when it suddenly swerved to the right and that before he had time to react, he hit the two pedestrians. Thomas stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
