Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate at a BSO jail infirmary in Pompano Beach.

At 7:12 a.m. the medical staff at the BSO North Broward Detention Complex infirmary discovered that a 56-year-old inmate was unconscious and unresponsive. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at 7:32 a.m. Per standard procedure in all in-custody death cases, the BSO Homicide Unit was called upon to investigate.

The inmate was arrested on a warrant charging him with DUI with Serious Injury on January 30th. A longtime dialysis patient, he underwent the procedure three times a week. After eating breakfast early today, he was again scheduled to undergo dialysis. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner, but it appears that he died as a result of blood loss after a shunt in his arm, used to connect him to the dialysis machine, ruptured.

Kidney dialysis patients do not require constant monitoring but the jail medical staff does make regular checks. Records indicate that the inmate was fine when he was checked at 6:24 a.m. but was unconscious when he was next checked at 7:12.

The name of the deceased inmate is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
