Place of Occurrence: Berth 19 at Port Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale

Victim(s):

Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide detectives are investigating what seems to be the accidental drowning of a man in Port Everglades this morning.

According to initial reports, 26-year old Gilberto Cruz of Panama, a crewmember aboard the freighter “Atlantis” was unlashing containers on the deck of the craft at about 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2002 when he apparently fell into the waters below.

Moments after Cruz was noticed missing, the crew from the Antiguan-registered ship began a search of the vessel. When the search failed to turn up any sign of the missing man, the Broward Sheriff's Office was contacted.

BSO’s Aviation Unit and Marine Unit searched for Cruz and at about 1:42 this afternoon, the Dive Team found his body off the ship’s bow in about forty feet of water.

The Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

BSO investigators do not suspect foul play at this time.
